Are braces uncomfortable?

Introduction

It is common for most people to feel discomfort from braces from time to time.  It may depend on the type of braces that you have and your age.  Traditional braces may cause more discomfort than newer types of braces.  Orthodontics may be a bit more bothersome after the age of 18.

Symptoms

You may develop sensitive areas or sores on your lips when your braces are first applied.  It may take your mouth a little while to get used to having something new in it.  You may experience minimal to moderate pain when your braces are first applied or after an adjustment.

Diagnosis

Your orthodontist will let you know what to expect from wearing braces.  You will be provided with information and products to use if you experience pain or sores.  If you experience unusual severe pain, you should contact your orthodontist immediately.

Treatment

You should follow your orthodontist’s instructions if you develop sores or pain.  You may place dental wax on your braces to prevent lip sores until your lips have adjusted to your braces.  Your orthodontist may recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever for pain and discomfort.  It can be helpful to eat soft foods after your braces are first applied or adjusted.
